Pink Shirt Day
There are many causes and charities in Aotearoa, and Pink Shirt Day is one of them. Pink Shirt Day is championed by the Mental Health Foundation every year. It takes place on a Friday in May each year. This year it’s taking place on the 15thof May. The concept behind it, is to wear a pink shirt, if you’re like me you can buy the official t-shirt and the proceeds go to the mental health foundation, or you can wear any pink shirt and show support and stand up against bullying. This is a cause that is quite close to me. Once I found my voice, I have never shied away from sharing about being bullied my entire life. Regardless of whether people think it is work talk or not.
The reality is that a lot of us face some form of bullying as kids, adults, and in between. Bullying takes different forms. As an adult, I know the lasting impact being bullied can have. Music has always been my escape. Maybe that’s why I’m passionate about pursuing a career in which music plays a significant role. I felt like music gave me a way to express my feelings and emotions in a way that I couldn’t put into words. For others it might be something different.
I won’t delve much more into this topic, other than the fact that this is a charity I’m quite passionate about. I’m not the best at asking for donations, so whilst I did fundraise for the Mental Health Foundation as part of participating in the Auckland Marathon, I didn’t scratch the surface at raising anything. But I’m hoping that this blog helps them in a different way. I know that sometimes it can feel daunting and hard to talk about being bullied, and in the case of workplace bullying, not stand up for yourself because of whatever reason. But if you ever need it, I’m always here for a chat or a coffee (or both).
Until next time,
Mili
